Three Steps to a More Candid Culture

December 29, 2014

Leaders often try to create an open culture, where people feel comfortable speaking up and challenging one another, by saying they’re listening.

But you can go further to demonstrate that your company is a safe place for people to raise issues.

  • Praise publicly.  Create a safe forum for people to raise questions and concerns, and then laud those who ask them. Public acknowledgment is more about influencing those who hear it than those who receive it.
  • Model behavior.  You can show that it is safe to speak up by saying the hard things yourself. Raise difficult issues to show they’re not taboo and encourage people to contribute to the conversation.
  • Teach communication skills.  Don’t just encourage openness. Teach people how to have difficult conversations that involve diffusing tensions, speaking candidly without provoking resistance, and quickly building rapport. These new skills will leave people more confident…

healer cover for kindleSo the first review for THE HEALER  is out – from an early Advance Review Copy, and althought it is another month before the book is out, this is too good to keep to myself. Thanks Paulette Mahurin for this excellent write-up and the 5 stars:

“The story opens with Erica, a pancreatic cancer patient, having just finished a bout of radiation. She is out in the Wales’ countryside in search of a Guru healer, Arpan. December 23, 2014

Mary J Melange

christmas-tree-decoratedAs of December 23, 2014, at approximately 1 pm, I will be on vacation from work. I don’t have to go back until January 5th. Much like a five year old child on Christmas Eve, I can hardly wait. Instead of the “Twelve Days of Christmas,” this will be the Twelve Days of Vacation. WooHoo!

Yeah, those thoughts. I am putting them in a box and burying them out in the field.

This week, I will spend Christmas Eve with good friends, food, wine and a Hobbit movie. On Christmas Day, my brother and his girlfriend come to town for four…
